Giuseppe is what we would call a “renowned” restaurant and it always has been. Our advice for those who are planning a trip to these areas, between the Grue and Ossona valleys, is to arrive at sunset to enjoy the breathtaking panorama. Giuseppe is also the model of a self-sufficient restaurant that makes its own salami and wine, knowing that its specialty in season are the mushrooms....even the famous Italian chef Gualtiero Marchesi had a weakness for them. The dining room is bright and well cared for, the hospitality honest and discrete, the wine list focuses on local products (the patron Giuseppe is a wine producer with the Pomorosso winery, which produces an exceptional Timorasso, made from vineyards that border with Walter Massa).
The meal opens (starters the trio €12) with a few slices of our good homemade salami, before the baked and stuffed bell pepper, Fassone beef tartare with artichokes, cotechino (pork sausage) en croute with spinach sauce, cardoon flan with fondue, truffle and bagnacaoda. The first course (€10) includes agnolotti filled with stewed meat, wafer-thin tagliolini that in season can be served with a mushroom sauce and potato gnocchi with Montebore sauce. In season, the porcini soup is a must. The second course (€14) dishes, the true flagship of the restaurant, include more mushrooms, breaded, with vine leaf and sautéed, but the veal with the braised brisket in Croatina, and the lightly breaded oven baked rabbit are also very interesting. They also cook hare and polenta and boar with chestnuts. The cheeses produced by Roberto Grattone and Luca Montaldo are worth the journey alone. To close (€6), in summer, the Volpedo peaches are fleshy in the Moscato terrine, or syruped (which can also be bought in a jar), next to bonet, nougat semifreddo, pear tart with cream. Tasting menu €50 including the house wines. A stop-off point with a heart. In summer, it is possible to access the swimming pool.
