This square shaped 60-metre-high brick construction, illuminated by small single-lancet windows, overlooks the entire town and becomes its most characteristic symbol. The lower part belongs to the first construction dating to the 11th century. Raised primarily for defensive purposes, over time it became the symbol of municipal power. In the early 16th century, the Paleologi, Marquises of Monferrato, commissioned the architect and sculptor Matteo Sanmicheli (Porlezza, active from 1480 to 1528) the construction of the loggia shaped crownwork. Also square-shaped, it is formed by four double-lancet windows, topped by an octagonal loggia culminating with a column covered by a small cupola and embellished with dolphins. Modernised through the centuries with painted plaster and stucco decorations, its current appearance dates back to the restoration work carried out in 1920.
