Alessandria features several important examples of twentieth-century Rationalist architecture, connected with the activity of the Milanese architect Ignazio Gardella - with his father Arnaldo and son Jacopo - and with work commissioned by Teresio Borsalino. Borsalino is responsible for the construction of the aqueduct and the sewers, the 'Gardella' tuberculosis sanitarium and Casa della Divina Provvidenza.
The Tuberculosis Dispensary (in via don Gasparolo, 2-4) is recognized as one of the most significant examples of 1930s Italian architecture - today it is named after Gardella; the architecture presents stylistic Gardellan features such as the use of innovative materials (the glass-concrete of the facade) combined with the recovery of elements which recall the rural farming environment such as the section in brick lattice.
Casa della Divina Provvidenza (in piazza Divina Provvidenza, 10) is a group of buildings - built in 1927 and designed by the architects Arnaldo Gardella and Luigi Martini, which has a refined and essential style, recalling the Renaissance architectural culture.
Other buildings and projects by Ignazio Gardella in Alessandria include:
- the Hygiene and Prophylaxis Laboratory (in via Don Gasparolo, 1);
- ‘Cesare Arrigo’ children's hospital (in spalto Marengo, 46);
-  ‘A. Volta’ industrial technical institute (in spalto Marengo, 42);
- Fur cutting facility (in via Wagner 38/d).
