The fame of Volpedo, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, is linked to its most distinguished representative, Pellizza da Volpedo, one of the greatest Italian painters between the 19th and 20th century. It is still possible to visit the atelier, almost intact after his tragic disappearance, but the entire village recalls the artist thanks to a series of reproductions that place the paintings in their “natural” setting. In the square dedicated to the Fourth State, the positions of the main characters have also been highlighted and a lamp-post indicates the position in which Pellizza placed his easel.
The medieval urban structure of Volpedo is still clearly visible in several parts of the village and in the Pieve of San Pietro, sober on the outside but rich in frescoes on the inside that range from the 14th to the 16th century.
Volpedo has always been a village with a clearly agricultural vocation, at the centre of a rural area that produces high quality fruit and vegetables, such as the Princi-pesca, the typical peach of the area, particularly large and flavourful. Piazza Perino already home to the livestock market is now the centre of the fruit market as well as of food festivals and fairs, such as the Strawberry, destination of many lovers of countryside products.
