There are traces of the settlement of a group of people long before Roman rule.
The first definite news, in the historical era, referring to Rivarone, is found in a document of 977, with which Emperor Ottone I transfers Bassignana and Rivarone to the Bishop of Pavia. This is a unique area on the left bank of the River Tanaro on route to the Po of the great Roman roads Emilia and Emilia-Scauri, of fundamental importance in the connections and traffic of cloths and salt for Northern Europe. Rivarone goes on to follow the fate of all the Italian territories which from the late 15th century experience only war, retaliation and transfers, which are far from smooth, by the Emperor to the King of France, or rather, to the respective and interested allies in Italy. Rivarone also follows the events of the Savoy dynasty from the first half of the 18th century.
The emblem of Rivarone is a cherry tree, planted in the 1930s. In recent decades the cherry trees have experienced a major revival with national and regional awards that certify the quality and the typicality of the "early cherry of Rivarone". The cherry offers the pretext for the traditional "cherry festival" usually held in May.
