Giulio Monteverde was born in Bistagno in 1837. He began studying in Genoa and then in Rome, at the Accademia di San Luca where he achieved significant technical progress. In the early 1870s he enjoyed his first great string of successes with works that showed a confident positivist approach to the theme of human genius and technical and scientific progress. In 1884 he set up his residency and his atelier in a palazzo of piazza Indipendenza in Rome, which he had specifically built: his intense career studded with a large amount of international commissions, above all connected with burial and celebratory monuments, made him one of the leading figures of the official art of his time, involved in committees and juries and awarded honorary posts. In the last five years of his life, Monteverde returned to the area of Acqui, his birthplace, with a series of sculpted "gifts"


In 1919, two years after his death, his daughters donated the collection of the plaster models which had accumulated in his Roman atelier to the city of Genoa: the majority of these works, following various donations and loans for use in favor of Bistagno, now make up the "Giulio Monteverde" plaster cast gallery.
The gallery occupies seven rooms on the first floor of Palazzo Leale, built in the late nineteenth century to host the local schools. The museum layout dates back to 2001 and chronologically and thematically traces the key stages in the artistic career of the sculptor, who was born in Bistagno in 1837.
