The oldest history of Terzo dates back to Roman times to which it also owes its name: it is three miles from Aquae Statiellae (Acqui). For centuries, Terzo has played a pivotal role thanks to the passage of the Via Aemilia Scauri that connected Vado with Acqui Terme to continue on to Tortona. The medieval tower of Terzo is what remains of the fortified structures of the castle whose traces date back to the 10th century. The Malaspina settled in their fiefs in the late 14th century and began a deep military reorganization. In Terzo, they had the Castle and tower rebuilt according to the most modern criteria of the time: openings that were oriented differently, sloped base with ashlar corners, crenelated parapet on corbels. In the early 18th century, the wars ended and it lost its defensive role, remaining a residence until the early 19th century when it fell into ruin, having been completely abandoned. Only the tower remained as a visible witness. The tower of Terzo is one of the few structures that can also be visited internally. The top is reached by climbing a long wooden staircase of more than 100 steps. From the top it is possible to see the plain which is home to Acqui and the hills towards Bistagno.
The Tower is part of the Castelli Aperti event.
