The original chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate arose in the Late Middle Ages, presumably around the thirteenth century; nevertheless, the first mention of the Church of S. Antonii de la Rocheta unita cum dicta plebe dates to 1523 and appears on a list of churches of the diocese of Tortona, while documents of several decades later state that it depended on the Church of San Giovanni Battista of Albera Ligure. In 1655, the Rocchettina community was established as an autonomous parish, independent of the mother church of Albera; the first stone of the new church was laid in 1663 and the building was completed by the following year.
