The parish church was that of Santo Stefano sopra il colle until 1570. After that date, Cerretto was under the Parish of Persi. Nevertheless, for the inhabitants of Cerreto it was inconvenient to cross the river to go to church. Consequently, in 1654, Abbot Giò Batta Maiocchi, brother-in-law of a member of the Rati family, had a new parish church built in Castel Ratti. Once again, the distance prevented the inhabitants from going to mass in the new church. Mons. Settala had another church built following the countless requests by the population. He had Monteggio added to the parish.
