Built by the testamentary wishes of Maddalena Trotti, the first stone of the parish Church of San Carlo was laid in 1631.
The building of the church, dedicated officially to Saints Carlo and Anna, is a slow process: the war events of the time cause repeated interruptions in the construction work (in the meantime the parish church was the nearby Church of Annunziata, no longer present, and replaced by a small public garden).
The choir was completed in 1665 and the church terminated in 1714, with a façade that recalls that of Santa Maria della Corte in its shapes.
In 1892, the belltower was added, based on a project by the engineer Crescentino Caselli, an academic in Turin and designer of the original polychrome crown.
In the sacristy behind the church, Paolo Daneo, who later became San Paolo della Croce, wrote the first text of the Passionist rule between 1720 and 1721. The rooms occupied by the future saint are home to a small museum on his life, managed by the Passionist fathers who live in the house behind the church.
