In the late 19th century, the ancient parish church of Sezzadio, considered unsafe, was demolished. On 10 April 1896 on the same site as the previous one, construction work began on the new church, more suited to the needs of the residents, according to the plans of the engineer Francesco Gualandi of Bologna.
The parish priest Don Domenico Vespa, who had strongly supported the new construction, blessed the first stone with the presence of the civilian and ecclesiastical authorities on 26 April 1896; the building was terminated in August 1898 and in 1899 the high altar was consecrated, donated by the priest Don Giovanni Battista Piccione of Sezzadio.
In 1902, Francesco Gualandi died at the age of eighty and his son Giuseppe, who was already his assistant, took over the works which continued until 1934 when the last two bells were placed on the new bell tower.
Today the impressive structure of the Parish church characterises the profile of the town of Sezzadio, its rich cupola is visible from a great distance in the surrounding plain.
