Palazzo Lignana di Gattinara, in Rivalta Bormida, is the headquarters of the Elisabeth de Rothschild Foundation. It is located at the end of Contrada Lunga, now via Giuseppe Baretti. The building, with its sober elegant facade, is a typical example of an aristocratic residence of "Alto Monferrato" (southern part of Monferrato). The late-Gothic structure was modified in the 17th century as evidenced by the inscriptions in the loggia. From the 17th century portal, passing through the walnut- wood door, you enter the Loggia degli Esposti (16th to 17th century), so called because it is home to the 16th stone aedicule which housed the ruota degli esposti, the revolving door for taking fondlings, which was once in the monastery of San Teobaldo di Asti. The loggia faces onto a small and charming Italian-style garden, redesigned according to an 18th century map. Of particular interest is the monumental staircase with frescoes (18th century) and the marquis chapel which houses paintings and family heirlooms (18th and 19th century). “Orgoglio e Pregiudizio” Two thousand years of Jewish history through historical sources Introduction to the Exhibition The historic exhibition “Orgoglio e Pregiudizio” was permanently transferred to the 16th century Palazzo Lignana di Gattinara, from April 2017. Through precious and rare historical documents, the exhibition retraces the last two thousand years of Jewish history starting from the ancient Kingdom of Judea up to the modern State of Israel. Six themed sections narrate the stages that have marked the history of the Jewish people in the Diaspora. The goal is to provide an incisive contribution to the deepening of Jewish history as well as an aid for better knowledge and understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, of the current reality and future hoped-for opportunities for peace. "Orgoglio e Pregiudizio" is for students, teachers, journalists and all those who wish to deepen the topics treated with specific educational paths. The historical material has been grouped into six themed sections: 1 From the Origins to the Late Middle Ages (Roman, Paleo-Aramaic, Arabic coinage and various Late Medieval documents) 2. The Counter-Reformation and Christian anti-Judaism (genesis of anti-Judaism; the Anti-Jewish Papal bulls) 3. The emancipation (Albertine Statute and Jewish integration in Italian society at the end of the 19th century). 4. The anti-Semitic propaganda during Fascism (iconography) 5. The implementation and effects of racial laws. The Shoah 6. The State of Israel (from the Mandate of Palestine to the State of Israel retracing the key historical phases: from the legal requirements of the Mandate of the Arab-Israeli war through the different alyots, The National Jewish Fund, the acquisitions of lands and, finally, considerations on the peace process). The exhibition, sponsored by the UCEI (Union of Italian Jewish Communities), by the Cultural Bureau of the Embassy of Israel, was inaugurated in Palermo in Palazzo Alliata of Villafranca in June 2015, in the presence of the President of the Sicilian Region and, later, in November 2016, set up at the Jewish Community of Casale Monferrato. With the further authoritative sponsorship received from the Institute of the Italian Encyclopaedia Treccani, in November 2016 “Orgoglio e Pregiudizio” was presented in Rome, at the headquarters of the Institute of the Italian Encyclopaedia in Palazzo Mattei of Paganica, by Prof. Anna Foa and by Dr. Roberta Ruth Cerruto, in the presence of the President Massimo Bray, former Minister of Culture and of the Cultural Delegation of the Embassy of Israel.
