The province of Alessandria cherishes its past traditions. It is a highly variegated territory with each area preserving traces of a rural culture which has never been forgotten thanks to private or public collectors, even if it has been surpassed by technology. Consequently, we find museums which allow the visitor to become acquainted with how our grandparents lived and the tools they used for working the land.
The “Cultura Contadina in Valle” Museum in Fabbrica Curone is in an old, renovated porch-barn and occupies two floors. The exhibition starts from the kitchen, an area in which the most important room of the peasant home has been reconstructed with fireplace, andirons, cabinets, table-work area, couch, and lots of kitchen utensils. The two large rooms on the ground floor are home to the tools used to work, gather and select the products from the land, with different exhibits for each type, to show the technological evolution through the centuries. On the upper floor, the first section exhibits the means of transport, the weights and measures, the lamps and the lanterns for lighting, the tools for working the wood, for carding and spinning wool, for producing milk and cheese, followed by the artisan workshops of the carpenter, shoemaker, and blacksmith, as well as the old equipment for pressing the grapes and making wine.
The exhibition concludes with the farmer’s bedroom, reconstructed and furnished with original pieces and with great attention to detail.
The Museum is open all year, to book a visit contact the Municipality of Fabbrica Curone. The contacts are listed below.
