The museum has been created to safeguard and hand down to future generations a culture and a way of life which has disappeared, also between the mountains of Val Curone. There are collections of tools, equipment, machinery, documents and objects that show visitors the population's struggle for survival. The museum is divided into 26 sections with more than 600 exhibits, of which only half are on show today. The visitor can view and/or purchase the videocassette which faitfully reproduces how the charcoal was made using the ancient method of the
"carbuneina".
"La carbuneina" was a rudimental but highly effective chemical system which served to transform the wood into charcoal with very slow combustion, taking place in oxygen-deficiency, and distillation. Carried out in a specifically prepared area in which the wood, covered with dry leaves and then soil, was arranged in such a way as to allow the circulation of the fumes according to certain itineraries dictated by experience. There was an opening above, from where the employees controlled the chemical reactions and provided new wood for the process. The procedure in Italian is called carbonaia and periodically reproposed by the Circolo Lunassese during the events it organises
