Franco Ivaldi comes from a family traditionally dedicated to vine cultivation. The time he spent on the family farm and in the vineyards encourage him to become passionate about wine, first as a sommelier and taster and later as wine producer. In 1995, he opens a new winery with his wife Caterina, his daughter Elena and son Giorgio, an oenologist. The Franco Ivaldi winery is located in Caranzano di Cassine (AL), in southern Monferrato a few kilometres from the city of Acqui Terme, in a territory that has always been highly suited to vine cultivation and the site of several important designations of origin. The philosophy of the winery mirrors a system of vine cultivation with monitored yields. The wine is produced maximising the special qualities of the different grapes and of the different vineyards with the goal of producing wines with typical perceptible characteristics, expressions of a unique territory and of its enviable vines, the Monferrato, recently designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The reasons for this are the choices made by the winery related to technology and wine making techniques that range from separation of the different batches to the limited and reasoned use of the wood containers to refine red wines. The traditional vines Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa, Moscato and Cortese, which have always been connected to the territories of Monferrato were joined, from the first years of the winery, by a ‘new’ vine with great prospects: Albarossa, a totally Piedmontese crossbreed, Nebbiolo from Dronero for Barbera, studied in 1938 by Professor G. Dalmasso and experimented in the early 2000s by Tenuta Cannona (Experimental Vine and Wine Centre of Regione Piemonte).
