The site extends along a stretch of the River Po, just downstream of the confluence with the Dora Baltea and presents valuable flora and fauna specimens. Santa Maria Island is delimited to the south by the active riverbed of the River Po and to the north by the Doretta Morta, paleo riverbed of the Dora Baltea, now primarily fed by spring water. The area is crossed by a system of cycle paths, realised by the Park Authority, which covers the entire Vercelli/Alessandria section of the Po Park.
