According to several documents found, the fortress of Carbonara Scrivia dates back to the 14th or early 15th century. The typical construction, defined "keep", was built by Pierino Cameri over a preceding one belonging to the Curolo family, lords of Carbonara, who fell into decline from 1246. At that time, aside from the keep, the defence system of Carbonara Scrivia consisted of a fortified enclosure or castle, moat and two access points. Inside the enclosure there was a well. In the mid 15th century, it passed to the Guidobono Cavalchini family who maintained it until the 1980s, and then gave it to the Municipality of Carbonara Scrivia as a gift. The fortress, on a par with the castle of which no trace remains, was destroyed and rebuilt many times. In 1828, a major earthquake ruined the fortress and, a few years later, the last and final collapse of the roof significantly damaged the construction. The external construction alternates bricks and stone in the scarp wall. Two elevated towers to strengthen the curtain wall are connected by a projecting walkway on brackets and embrasures.
