Pilgrimage destination for centuries, it is now a combination of structures that date from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries on what was the original fifteenth century nucleus. Before the current building there was a shrine around which the Oratory of San Bernardino was built in 1450, following the passage of San Bernardino da Siena on an apostolic pilgrimage. The name added itself to the older name of Santa Maria delle Grazie.
Over time, a hospice for pilgrims was built and later it became a convent. The eighteenth century saw the most important work of enlargement and transformation take place on the building, turning it into the Sanctuary it is today.
