Just outside of Tortona, on the right bank of the Grue, Viguzzolo takes its name from the Latin root vicus, and just like a small village it expanded probably in the early years of the Christian era, after the place had already been colonised in a more fragmentary way in the Roman age. At the times of the Holy Roman Empire, it was entrusted by Charles the Great to a leader called Marescotti, before entering the dominations of the Visconti, Sforza, Fogliani Sforza d'Aragona, to the Savoy. The most interesting building is certainly the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria Assunta with the mobile Crucifix inside.
