Rosignano Monferrato, in the heart of Monferrato Casalese, welcomes you in every season with breathtaking hill views, art-themed itineraries, fine wines, high quality culinary and artisan products that have earned it an Orange Flag from Touring.
The area falls within the "Monferrato degli Infernot", part of the UNESCO site "I Paesaggi Vitivincoli del Piemonte: Langhe-Roero e Monferrato"; the Infernot are fascinating spaces dug by man in Pietra da Cantoni (a local stone), true and proper works of art.
After an initial mention around the year 1000, the first documents on Rosignano are the statutes, completed in 1306, which document the birth of the free Municipality around 1250. Since then, with alternating fortunes, it has governed itself with its own laws and magistrates. Its history reflects that of Monferrato, with the Alerami, the Paleologi, the Gonzaga. Each affirms its full independence, and finally the Savoia and the French until Italian Unification.
A glorious and stormy century-old history, linked to the strategic position of the village, "sentinel of Casale" permanent seat of garrisons, besieged, occupied and looted many times, with the clamorous exception of 21 April 1640, in which civic pride united with a strong religious tension prevailed over the Spanish attackers. On the rock is the castle, presidium of the historic centre with its monuments, then descending to the Airali, once ancient dwellings of the plebeians. Then the vast municipal area whose borders, after modest reductions, date back to 1339 and unveil pleasant surprises: the two castles, of Uviglie with the blank stares of the long excavated hill at the side, and of San Bartolomeo in the Colma region, from where via Angelo Morbelli departs and leads to the home of the famous Divisionist painter.
On the opposite hill stands the parish of San Martino, the most populated hamlet and home to the "V. Luparia" agricultural college. There is also Stevani, Garriano and Berroni with the charming rural Church of San Pietro in Vincoli, Reali, Brenta, Varacca and Castagnoni: these are the names of the largest villages, while an extraordinary number of farmsteads, many names of which appear in ancient land registers, dot the hilly municipal area.
Rosignano Monferrato, the centre of which is perched on the hill, has a vast territory distributed among the many hamlets, to discover thanks to the installations of the itinerary on the sites of Angelo Morbelli – Morbellian Route (tribute to the famous Divisionist painter), with ideal departure from the Castle of Uviglie or from Villa Maria (summer residence of the artist), or of the Rural Extended Museum - The Civilisation of Wine. The Town hall is home to two Infernots and a Big Bench "Rosso Grignolino" has been installed in a scenic position close to the Church of Madonna delle Grazie.
