Garbagna, One of the Most Beautiful Towns in Italy, is the main centre of the Grue Valley, on the border with Liguria. Today, it appears as a small medieval town with a strong Ligurian imprint. The heart of the town is the Renaissance Piazza Doria, which recalls Prince Doria, Lord of Genoa and Garbagna. Palazzo Doria and the Oratory of San Rocco overlook the square. There are four horse chestnuts at the centre, which are more than 150 years old. Between them is an arch, memory of an ancient water spring that fed the population. In June, it hosts one of the most interesting events for fruit lovers, the Cherry of Garbagna Festival: "La Bella di Garbagna" is a Slow Food Presidium, of a brilliant red colour, very crunchy and particularly suited to preserving alcohol. The Oratory of San Rocco was built around 1580, following the great plague epidemic. It presents a magnificent facade frescoed by Giovan Battista Carlone (1603-1684). The Town is gathered around the Contrada, where the business and artisan activities are concentrated. The Church of San Giovanni Battista Decollato, patron saint of the town, was built from 1714. The church has an octagonal plan. There are important works of art, like the canvas of 'The Baptism of Christ' by Guglielmo Caccia known as Il Moncalvo (1568-1625). Particularly noteworthy is the 17th century organ. Located above the current populated centre, the Castle is perfect for a walk and as a lookout point. It is a medieval complex, built in the 9th century. The watchtower, entrance door and boundary wall are still visible.
