In 109 B.C. a settlement to defend the road to Acqui already existed close to what is now Gamalero. In 978, the village passes to the Bishop of Acqui and becomes part of his diocese. From 1315 to 1776, the territory passed from the Ghibellines to Francesco Visconti then to Ottone Visconti until annexation to the Savoy State in 1707. In 1776, Ambrogio M. Ghilini, the last feudal lord, sold the Castle, in 1802, to two local farmers, Giangiacomo Mascherpa and Carl'Antonio Piccino, who dismantled it to reuse its materials.
