Casale Monferrato was the capital of the Marquisate of Monferrato, but it still is today: it is in fact the main centre of the area included among the Piedmont Wine landscapes protected by UNESCO in 2014.
The different dynasties who have lived there, Aleramic, Paleologi, Gonzaga, Savoia, have enriched it with history and monuments, though leaving in evidence the original medieval layout. On the right bank of the River Po, the Castle of the Paleologi welcomes visitors with its imposing size: built for defensive purposes, today it houses exhibitions, events and the Regional Wine Shop of Monferrato. The Cathedral of Saint Evasio is a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture: the visit is ideally completed with the Museum of the Sacristy, which tells the historical phases, and the tour of the attic, from which the view of the narthex and nave is even more impressive. Other religious buildings worth visiting are the Churches of San Domenico and Santa Caterina.
The beautiful Synagogue in Piedmontese Baroque style remains in the old ghetto district. It is home to a Museum of Jewish Art and History and the Museum of Lights, which shows how ancient themes have been reinterpreted by 20th century artists.
The Civic Museum of Casale Monferrato is located in the former Augustinian Convent of Santa Croce: in addition to paintings by great artists such as Musso, Il Moncalvo and Guala, a true gem is the Plaster cast gallery of Leonardo Bistolfi, which gathers the works of the symbolist sculptor. Casale Monferrato is also the home of the Krumiri, the well-known biscuits, and of many food and wine specialties, making it the ideal destination for lovers of good food.
