Located in the centre of the province, close to the bank of the Orba stream which merges into the River Bormida further down the valley. The origins, based on the finds of a Ligurian necropolis of the 2nd century BC , seem to date from the Antique Age. There are two rustic buildings in the countryside to be pointed out: "Cascina Campagna", 11th-century farmstead-fortress with interiors in Lombard-Gothic style and "Tenuta la Torre" perhaps derived from a Lombard "curtis" (manor) which San Pio V had transferred to the Convent of Santa Croce. The Nature Reserve is characterized by rich and variegated vegetation and fauna typical of river environments. The hamlet of Portanova is of particular importance in the area because it was one of the lands which took part in the foundation of the town of Alessandria around 1168 to prevent any new Barbarian invasion following that by Federico Barbarossa.
