Carrega Ligure is a mountain border municipality located in the extreme southwestern area of the Piedmont Region, Province of Alessandria, in the protected area of Val Borbera. A small village immersed in greenery, ideal for those who want to walk in nature. The area is crossed by numerous trails of great natural and historical interest. One such trail takes to the abandoned hamlets (Villages of Stone trail) or to the Malaspina Castle. The entire municipal territory is considered an offshoot of the Ligurian Apennine belt and takes on an importance that goes beyond the strictly geo-morphological profile. Indeed, many anthropic factors such as dialect, traditions, costumes, music and business relations connect this territory closely to the valleys of the Ligurian, Piacentine and Emilian hinterland. The municipal territory extends for approximately 56 km² and is divided into twenty or so housing clusters and by widespread building scattered throughout the territory. Fifteen of these nuclei (Agneto, Berga, Boglianca, Campassi, Ca’ dei Campassi, Capanne di Carrega, Carrega Ligure, Cartasegna, Connio, Croso, Daglio, Fontanachiusa, Magioncalda, San Clemente e Vegni) are inhabited, if not for the entire year, for a good part of it. Others, including Chiapparo, Ferrazza and Prao, are inhabited occasionally for a few weeks of the year, mostly in high summer. Finally: Reneuzzi and Casoni are two nuclei that have been completely abandoned following the depopulation connected with the industrial boom of the 1950s and 1960s.
