Named Castrum Carpani in a tenth-century document, Carpeneto was a strategic location between the areas of Tortona and Acqui which led to Genoa. The village, originally an Aleramic fiefdom, passed under the dominion of historical noble families and was finally annexed to the Savoyard States. In 1841, Count Giovanni Gerolamo Rolla sold the castle with the annexed lands to the Marquises Pallavicini, whose descendants are the owners to this day.
