Bosco Marengo is famous for being the birthplace of Antonio Ghislieri (1504-1572), who became pope in 1566 taking the name of Pius V, to date the only Piedmontese pontiff, among the key promoters of the Counter-Reformation and proclaimed a Saint. The family home is still visible in the centre of the village.
He commissioned the grandiose Dominican convent of Santa Croce, important example of Roman Mannerism in northern Italy. It is home to the works of leading artists, from Vasari to Moncalvo and the mausoleum of Pius V (whose real burial place is in Rome). The visit of the Convent, now partly a Museum, meanders between the two cloisters, the immense spaces and the Library, built on the model of that of St. Mark’s in Florence.
Among the monuments of the historical centre, we recall the parish Church of SS. Peter and Pantaleon, in which the same workers worked in Santa Croce in the 16th century.
Bosco Marengo is home to a Visitor Centre of the Piedmont Po Park, at the Municipal Mill. A diorama illustrates the environment of the Heronry of the River Orba Nature Reserve.
