Avolasca is a charming village situated in the upper Grue valley; it is composed of a small agglomeration of houses, situated at the top of a steep and winding climb. On the highest point is the Parish church of San Nicola built on the foundations, still visible, of the old castle. The origins of Avolasca seem to date back to Roman times, but the archival documents found do not go beyond the 12th century. The resources are mainly linked to agriculture, craft activities and breeding. The main agricultural products are wheat, maize and fodder; wine growing is widespread, and animal breeding is discreetly important. Cherries, apricots and peaches are also cultivated. The surrounding woods are exploited for timber, but offer tasty chestnuts, flavourful mushrooms and exquisite game, while from the many truffle grounds come fragrant truffles, a delight for gourmet palates. Of particular interest is the former nursery school of Avolasca, built by the architect Coppedè.
