The castle is in the extreme south-eastern corner of Piedmont, right next door to Liguria, and stands on on a hill. It is one of the oldest buildings in the Monferrato region and some experts date it as far back as the tenth century. Rebuilding and alteration work has changed the original structure with a lot of Renaissance work, like the round, jutting towers and others even in the Baroque style. The square towers are not much higher than the castle walls and even with the round towers do not do much to change the squat nature of the building. Despite this the structure of the castle of Casaleggio Boiro as well as many other fortified buildings in the Ovada and Oltregiogo area were of interest to Andrade.
The castle of Casaleggio Boiro has an enviable position, unusual as it is, being quite separate from the village, standing entirely on its own, apart from a small church. This isolated position gives the castle a very special backdrop and makes it a natural choice for filming, such as for the TV version of the “Promessi Sposi” directed by Sandro Bolchi and with actors like Tino Carraro, Marisa Merlini, Lilla Brignone, Paola Pitagora and Nino Castelnuovo. In the film, the castle was the hideaway for the young couple and where Don. Abbondio went to free Lucia.
